A
well planned vacation can be spoiled by a couple of apples which are rotten, or
in this situation TSA agents who are touchy-feely and bartenders who are
creepy.
Even
though travel is a rewarding and enriching experience, nowadays it can also be
very stressful. The rules of airlines are becoming stricter, there is a rise in
rates of hotels, and then there are the employees of the travel industry who do
not want things to be made easier for anyone.
I
have rounded up some of the people who when you embark on trips can be the
worst to have an encounter with.
The maid who
is noisy
To visualize a stranger going through your belongings is a
creepy thing. Last fall, the worst nightmare of everyone was confirmed when headlines
were made when
a housekeeper at a hotel was caught on camera while the personal belongings
of a guest were being riffled through. Terrible!
The proof of this video is that when you are not there the maids
are going to take over and there is no safety for your property. And speaking
of safety, there is wisdom in having it used. Even though a traveler is not
supposed to be concerned about their belongings when they are comfortable in
the room of their hotel, it is still preferable to make mistakes while being
cautious.
The masseuse who is overly chatty
Who does not delight in checking out the spa of a hotel to
decompress and unwind? Unfortunately, with the worn masseuse a pampering of bliss
can turn out to become really annoying. Even though the staff of spas have
trainings on appropriate interaction on a one-to-one basis with guests of
hotels, the memo does not seem to get read by everyone.
Recently, New York City’s Rubin Museum of Art head of marketing
Daniel Hernandez Lyon paid a visit to a thermal spa situated close to Padova in
Italy and encountered a masseuse who was overly loquacious. He revealed that as
soon as he had walked into the treatment room for a massage he was immediately
questioned by the masseuse with regards to where he was making his visit from. However
that was not where it stopped. There was a dimming of the lights and he had
settled in waiting for the regular 60 minutes of being completely disconnected
from the world outside when questions were continuously thrown at him about his
work, his experience with the culture of Italy and even small stuff like the
foods which were his favorites.
So what was done by Lyon? The only thing that crossed his mind. After
around 30 minutes of talking that was incessant, he pretended to sleep off!
The cab driver who cheats
A tourist who is taking a ride-share service or a taxi is
usually in a territory that is unfamiliar. And this fact is known by drivers. Some
of them feel no remorse or qualms of having you taken for a ride figuratively
and literally by going on a detour that is long just to make the fare higher.
Then there are the ones who are really shady like this
dude in Bangkok: after he had started the meter a very long time even
before the passenger had gotten into the cab, he proceeded to have the meter
covered with a cloth in the hopes that it would not be noticed by anyone. When it
was noticed by the tourist, the driver of the cab had series of blatant lies
told including that the cabs which were older were not permitted to have their
meters repaired, that the fare at the beginning went up, and so on. If the cab
option was not working out for him, he could do well writing fiction as a
career.
The flight attendant who is rude
Even though our flight attendants who are cheerful are loved by
all of us, there is always the regular Debbie Downer who has us prevented from
relaxing, sitting back, and having the flight enjoyed. The protocol of a rude
flight attendant comprise of fetching you a glass of water begrudgingly, having
a cart rammed into the foot of a passenger without flinching, and having call
buttons ignored.
It is actually a thing of fact. In 2013, flight attendant rage
was called out by The Wall Street Journal and now their incidents are being
documented by travelers like the passenger who on a recent United flight got shamed
because she was breast feeding. This just shows that even at 10,000 feet it
is not all smiles. A
poll on the flight attendants who are the rudest was even published by USA
Today, with the top spots being taken by Air Canada and Spirit.
The TSA agent who is touchy feely
While you are going through the security line at the airport,
the words “body check!” are the last thing anyone would want to hear. However for
a lot of passengers this it their fate. A pat down that is complete is supposed
to not be a meaningless and substantial grope by agents who are rude, but then
the sad truth is that it is so sometimes. Nobody would like to have a stranger
in a bad uniform feeling them up, especially from a person who is supposed to
be making our lives safer. But this does happen. One editor of Yahoo Travel has
sworn that at a Texas airport a TSA agent went to the base that was second
prior to her last flight.
The room service attendant that is weird
Room service is one of the best things about vacation. Unfortunately,
weird is how things can become when you are a lady who is alone wearing a
bathrobe and there is a waiter who is a little bit too friendly and lingering
around for a little bit too long. No, it is not okay to flirt, Mr. desperate
attendant for room service! And neither is it okay to be all creepy and stare. A
woman once felt the urge
to have such behavior called out in her review on TripAdvisor. Very awkward
indeed.
The cruise ship bartender who is lecherous
When it was done by Isaac from the love boat it was cool. But in
real life this is not the way it should be. Most servers on cruise ships have
their wages earned from tips. This is the reason why for their guests they
continue to bend over backwards. But an eagerness to please that is more than
ordinary could be displayed by a bartender on a cruise ship.
Is this being taught in the school for the cruise bartender? And
it does not mean that an escape is possible by you. Your are on a ship stuck with
the guy. Maybe this is the reason why on cruise lines bartenders that are robots
are phasing out bartenders that are humans.
The customer service agent who is a by-the-book enforcer
The understanding and appreciation is there by all of us that
their jobs have to be done by agents of customer service. However we also
understand that being a human being is also important. This is why if a flight
is missed by you because, let’s say there was a hospitalization of your
relative, the thought would be had by anyone that there would be an
understanding by the customer service agent and the change fee would be waived.
(Yes, this is actually very possible and is at their supervisor and the agent’s
discretion). Apparently, it is not always so. The hard way was learnt by one
passenger when
her family was not allowed to board a flight by Ryanair in order for her an organ transplant to be
gotten by her son. (Your gaping mouth can now be closed.) An apology has since been
made by the airline.
The vendor who is overly aggressive
Visualise that you are in Mexico in complete bliss while lying
down on a white-sand beach, only to have a vendor stop by every five minutes to
ask you if you would like to buy marijuana, fresh fruit, or silver bracelets. It’s
a travel epidemic that is growing and has the ability to have your vacation put
on a damper.
The worse thing about them is that they can often be too pushy
quite literally. In Phuket, a vendor who also rents out sun beds had a female
traveler harassed recently. When his services were refused by her, he went
ahead to have sand kicked on her and had her pushed away from her spot on the
beach.
The gate agent who is incompetent
Passengers are often seen by gate agents as just another big
mess of additional work. The particular agents of gates who really do not care
are those who want us to realize that a favour is being done to us by them. It is
not as if its their job or something. But wait a minute – it actually is their
job. I wish you the best of luck when you wish to switch to a seat on the aisle
without a feeling of persecution. Or do you want to make upgrades at the last
minute? You are late by one passenger.
Bridal Guide magazine’s
travel editor Jenna Mahoney recently revealed that she once gave thanks to a
gate agent for assisting her with a request. She had informed her that she was
helpful and super friendly and it was great because she was not been listened to
by her co-workers. The agent had told her that she had to understand and
appreciate that every day they had in their face thousands of people. This was
how she chose to respond to Mahoney for stating that she had been helpful. These
days even the Onion has a compulsion to mock
gate agents.
