The 1962 TWA Terminal in New York to be turned into a Hotel by JetBlue

The latest domestic airline to try to get into the business of hotels is JetBlue. The MCR Development and the carrier are reportedly in talks with New York and New Jersey Port Authority to establish inside JFK Airport’s shuttered TWA terminal a hotel which was in 1962 completed and established with designs by Eero Saarinen the midcentury modern bigwig.

Since 2011, except for private events and tours the TWA Flight Center which is retro-futuristic is something of an emblem for the architecture style of the Jetsons of that day, has remained closed. Interest has been expressed by JetBlue to have the space reopened to the public and have it turned into a property of 500 rooms with the simple accessibility to the JFK terminal of the airline.

There has not been any finalization or conclusion in negotiations and attempts previously made to have the space developed – such as the one from Andre Balazs – have failed. However there seems to be the likelihood that the preferred bidder for the project is presently going to be JetBlue.

If a go-ahead is given to the airline, they are also going to require the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission’s approval because the building is both an interior landmark as well as an exterior one as well.
